Welcome to the great Las Vegas, the world's biggest casino!
A place full of neon, lights, gaming and entertainment venues that are sure to make your head spin. Yes, this is Las Vegas, the city of both sin and gambling. It’s really hard to choose from the variety of offerings that this city in the heart of Nevada has to offer.
The Origins of Las Vegas
A lot has been written about the history of Las Vegas. It is almost notorious that the name Las Vegas translates to Meadows, which suggests the original form of this part of the country. Over time, the burgeoning agricultural area and its fort turned into a protection for the Spanish Trail, then as a refuge for Mormons, and many years later as a place of rest and relaxation for workers from the nearby Hoover Dam.
Significant to the town’s founding, however, was the year 1931, when gambling was legalized in Nevada. It didn’t take long for fraud and organized crime to find their way to gambling, and the town soon had a touch of double adventure.
Las Vegas Attractions – Under the Neon LightsIn the past, the city was dominated by Fremont Street, which today is alive with a certain touch of United States film and music history. Elvis Presley, for example, filmed a scene for Viva Las Vegas here, and James Bond also fled down this street from the Las Vegas police in the legendary seventh Bond film, Diamonds Are Forever.
Today, the most famous street in Las Vegas is The Strip, built during the era of gambling mobster Benjamin Siegel. It is home to many casinos and restaurants, as well as many of the world’s largest hotels, including the five-star MGM Grand Hotel with more than 5,000 rooms.
Also worth mentioning is the Luxor, whose cone of light can be seen from space, or the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino, where this year’s U.S. beauty queen pageant was held. The annual CES electronics trade show is held here, and The Strip is also where you’ll be greeted by the world-famous “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign. There are other attractions in Las Vegas, however, and the most interesting is the Stratosphere Tower with the X-Scream, the world’s third tallest amusement ride at 264 metres.
Most Famous Casinos in Las Vegas
The atmosphere of the city tempts you to try to win and become a millionaire’s child of fortune. And that is exactly the reason why not only casinos, but also restaurants, shops and other services are thriving here.
If we wanted to focus on a few of the most famous casinos in Las Vegas, we certainly shouldn’t miss Caesars Palace Casino, founded in 1966 by entrepreneur Jay Sarno. He certainly didn’t skimp on luxury, and even had a six-metre statue of Julius Caesar erected in front of the entrance.
Another famous hotel with a casino is the Mandalay Bay. Opened in 1999, this giant resort with more than three thousand rooms is named after Burma’s second largest city and features the Shark Reef Aquarium and a Southeast Asian-style setting.
While visitors are intrigued by the water world at Mandalay Bay, it’s certainly not unreasonable to visit The Mirage, which was built in 1989 and was the most expensive casino in Las Vegas at the time, and most importantly, the first casino to use constant camera surveillance at all gaming tables.
Before we leave Las Vegas, let’s not forget the MGM Grand hotel. It’s the site of slot machines and opened in 1993, at the time the third largest hotel in the world.
